Meritocracy is real, and that's exactly the problem

If a society genuinely sorts people by ability, then the ones at the bottom have no excuse left — the old aristocracy at least let you blame birth. A perfect meritocracy manufactures humiliation at scale and calls it fairness. The uncomfortable implication is that some inefficiency in sorting people might be a feature, not a bug.
